The poster for Stanley Tucci’s Blind Date has a lickety-split 1950’s flair to it. In shades of carnation pink, baby blue, and canary yellow, it appears to announce a lighthearted romantic comedy full of innocent mixups à la Parent Trap.
Not the case. The movie begins with slow, furtive pans of a ramshackle café where the main character, Donald (Tucci), works as a barman who occasionally doubles as a magician. Though his performances are lively and humorous, often involving a bouquet of flowers pulled from his crotch (why audience members accept the flowers so graciously was a bit perplexing to me), his real life is a very different act.

Producent Gijs van de Westelaken (55) werd bekend door de films die hij met Theo van Gogh maakte, zoals Interview en 06/05. Na het overlijden van de regisseur realiseerde Van de Westelaken drie Amerikaanse remakes van titels van Van Gogh. De tweede in deze reeks, Blind Date, ging half januari in première op het prestigieuze Sundance Festival.

Als Patricia Clarkson na een acht minuten durende dialoog het café verlaat, blijft Stanley Tucci alleen achter aan het tafeltje. Droevig staart hij naar zijn handen. Dan kijkt hij weer op, triomfantelijk bijna en roept ‘Cut!’. De acteur Tucci maakt weer plaats voor regisseur Tucci.

Stanley Tucci Plans a ‘Blind Date’ for Sundance
It’s Sundance time! Vulture will be checking in with the talent from some of the most buzzed-about films making the rounds at this year’s fest — among them Stanley Tucci’s adaptation of late great Dutch director Theo Van Gogh’s Blind Date, which serves as the second in a Van Gogh remake trilogy that kicked off with Steve Buscemi’s excellent Interview, and also marks Tucci’s return to directing after many years away from the scene. Tucci chatted about the project with Vulture before heading out to Park City join the festivities.
